  • Morgan Wallen wins ACM award after being banned for a year following N-word controversy

Country singer Morgan Wallen returned to the 2022 ACM Awards Monday night after being banned from attending the show last year in the wake of his N-word controversy. In case you missed it, in February of 2021, video of Wallen using the N-word after a night out surfaced and, shortly after, Wallen was dropped from the airwaves and had his contract with his label suspended. However, Wallen's fans came back stronger and the singer's streams and sales skyrocketed. At the ACMs Monday, Wallen was all smiles as he won the award for Album of the Year, which, as you could imagine, had Twitter divided. Some fans were angry and disappointed by his win. One person tweeted: "They let Morgan Wallen win album of the year? The man who very publicly said the n word? And you give him an award?! I hate it here I really do," (@charles_buckel), while another shared their strong opinion, stating, "Morgan Wallen winning anything goes to show you country music has no issues with racists and celebrates then.  He's trash and those that like him are too." (@strummerthecat) On the other hand, some viewers took to the social media platform to congratulate him and slam cancel culture. One fan tweeted: "Morgan Wallen with a wayy overdue Album of the Year. Cancel culture can kiss his ass," (@RickR415) while another posted: "Give that man his gosh damn award! Thankfully the #ACMawards didn’t succumb to the cancel culture pressures like other award shows have. Every artist in Nashville knows he deserved that award, like him or not. So happy for the kid." (@TheDiddyBop) And it's because of that support that Wallen dedicated the end of his acceptance speech to his fans, as Wallen shared, "Most importantly, I have to address my fans personally and directly. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I'm blown away by you guys. God bless."

  • Taylor Swift returns to ACM Awards after seven years away from country scene

Swift has effectively reinvented herself as a pop star, but on the Opry stage Wednesday, she reminded everyone where she got her start.

  • Taylor Swift performs at the ACMs for the first time in 7 years

Taylor Swift made a long-awaited return to the country music stage during the '55th Academy of Country Music Awards' Wednesday night with a debut performance of "Betty" from her record-breaking new album Folklore. The singer's performance at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tennessee marks her first appearance at the ACM Awards in seven years, and fans of the singer were so thrilled to see her return to her country roots. One viewer tweeted: "Something about having Taylor Swift on the stage with just her guitar is so personal," while another fan shared: "The old country Taylor is finally back and she sounds amazing." Swift still wore some sequins worthy of an appearance on the Billboard Music Awards or VMAs, but her acoustic, stool-seated, harmonica-embellished “Betty” on the bare Opry stage was an otherwise subdued affair, stripped of all the bells, whistles, backup dancers, and giant hydraulic rattlesnakes of her recent awards show performances and stadium tours. Unsurprisingly, with the ACMs’ primetime broadcast being a family-friendly affair, she switched the song’s original caustic line “Would you tell me to go f*** myself” to the radio-edit version “Would you tell me to go straight to hell?” "Betty" is the first song of Swift's to hit the Top 10 of Billboard's Hot Country Songs since "Red" in 2013, and on Wednesday, the nine-time ACM award-winner reminded everyone where she got her start. Swift's return wasn't the only reason why the ACM Awards ceremony was historic this year. It was also the first ACMs to take place in the city of Nashville, and the first ACMs to take place during the COVID-19 era. Originally slated for April 2020 before it was delayed due to coronavirus concerns, the rejiggered telecast, hosted by Urban, aired from three socially distant, iconic Nashville venues: the Opry, the Ryman Auditorium, and the Bluebird Café. Other performers included Kelsea Ballerini, Luke Bryan, Luke Combs, Miranda Lambert, Maren Morris, Carrie Underwood, and two reality-show couples: The Voice coaches Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani and recently married American Idol Season 16 alumni Gabby Barrett (who is pregnant with her first child) and Cade Foehner.

  • Carrie Underwood joins ‘This Is Us’ star for powerful performance at ACM Awards

Chrissy Metz, the Emmy-nominated actress who plays aspiring singer Kate Pearson on the hit NBC drama This Is Us, made her live TV singing debut on the 2019 Academy of Country Music Awards -- and despite admitting in pre-show interviews that she was nervous about this “bucket list moment,” she more than held her own alongside her duet partners, country stars Carrie Underwood, Lauren Alaina, Maddie & Tae, and Mickey Guyton. Much like Pearson singing Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide” on Season 2 of This Is Us, Metz poured her heart in her Diane Warren-penned triumph-of-the-spirit anthem, “I’m Standing with You” from the soundtrack to her upcoming movie Breakthrough. The film tells the true story of Joyce Smith, whose son was pronounced dead after drowning, but miraculously came back to life after Smith prayed over his body, despite having had no pulse for 45 minutes. Metz’s touching all-star number was in conjunction with ACM Lifting Lives, the philanthropic arm of the Academy of Country Music. “The song is so beautiful, and I think it needs to be heard,” Metz told Entertainment Weekly earlier this week while preparing for the performance. “I’m going to push past the fear and do this, because it’s something I’ve always wanted. At the end of the day, after being prepared and who knows what goes on during the day, but what’s going to happen is going to happen, and if I stay present and authentic then that’s all I can ask of myself. You know? I’m just excited about it.” The soundtrack Breakthrough: Music From & Inspired by the Motion Picture features Metz and all four of her ACM Awards collaborators, along with tracks by Darius Rucker, Phil Pigeon John, and Kirk Franklin. “We are the soundtrack of this real-life story, because our music is about real-life stories,” Universal Music Group Nashville president Cindy Mabe told The Tennessean. “This performance lets Chrissy have her moment that she’s always wanted to have, and there’s the female standpoint of where we are in a moment in time in country radio. We have [one of the most recognizable names] on television with [one of the most recognizable names] in country music creating a platform for other women to shine. This is a gift.” Many women, including Miranda Lambert, Maren Morris, Ashley McBride, Kelly Clarkson, and Brandi Carlile, did shine at Sunday’s ACMs ceremony, and a couple other female country artists addressed the lack of female representation on country radio as of late. During her opening monologue, host Reba McEntire spoke up, joking, "Do you know it snowed in Las Vegas just a few weeks ago? "Yeah, it was so cold, it froze us women out of Entertainer of the Year.” (All five nominees in that category were men this year; the award ultimately went to Keith Urban.) “But you know what? That didn't bother Kacey Musgraves, because she's been too busy carrying all her Grammys around." Musgraves, whose Golden Hour won Album of the Year at this past February’s Grammy Awards and last year’s CMA Awards, took home the same honor at Sunday’s ACMs. Musgraves dedicated the award to “any woman, girl -- or anybody, really -- that is maybe being told that her perspective or style is too different to work. Just stay at it. It will work out.” The 54th Academy of Country Music Awards took place at the MGM Grand’s Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Breakthrough hits theaters April 17.
